In 1316,
Jonas is considered as a"castrum seu repayrium",
or "fortified place of minor importance".
A defensive device :
the brattice
It is build outside a room with limited depth.
It is actually a shed located over the entrance stairs.
Indeed, the entrance was the weakest point
when the place was attacked : the wooden door could be taken
down or burnt. Approaching attackers could be kept at a distance
by overlooking bowmen or people dropping stones on them, since
the floor of the brattice was partly open.
