Religion is ever present in the Middle Ages. It is symbolized in its purest form in Jonas with a chapel dug in the cliff. The beauty of the place witnesses the faith of those who built it.

The chapel was dug just above the older oratory of the monastery. Indeed, in time, sanctuaries tend to pile up or to be rebuilt in the same locations.

Altars were a priority during the building process. According to Christian custom, they faced East (here, the altar was built along the outer wall).

A whole corner of the chapel collapsed in 1706. There, the vaulted roof was designed as a canopy over the altar. Thus, there was a smaller chapel inside the chapel itself. It probably was dedicated to Mary, whose cult grew very popular in Auvergne during the course of the XIIth century.

A major hole and two smaller ones on the ceiling show that bells were present at the time.

Magnificent mediaeval frescoes adorn the chapel.
